Why does my business succeed?

First off let me say, I am not gloating in the "successes" of my business, just the mere fact that I can survive on what I love to do is succeeding to me. I had a conversation with another photographer friend of mine the other day. I told him how I have so many weddings booked for next year already and how thankful I was for that. He asked me, "How do I do it?." I didn't know a good answer on the spot... because I don't know how I do it! The whole conversation we had got me thinking about things, how did this happen? Not only do I have great customers who trust me to capture the most important times in their lives, I have an awesome God, whom I can trust during the most important times in my life. It is because HIM that my business succeeds. He has brought each and every one of you into my life and I will forever be grateful. You guys inspire me to be a great wife and an honest person. In turn I want be an inspirational person to others. I had a thought at church today, for those of you who don't know already Isaac and I attend Oswego Alliance Church. My pastor asked us, "What is your purpose in life, how do YOU personally make a difference in this little world?"
I know without a doubt that I am here to meet the needs of people. It can be any need, big or small, photography is just a tool I was given to do so. It is not just the photographs, but the meaning, emotions, and events captured that I hope will bring a smile to your face and bring your families together. I hope your lives will be blessed when you look at my photographs and that you can remember the good times during the difficult times. I pray that each and every bride and groom have a wonderful lasting marriage, filled with honesty, love, and fun. I am here for you, photography is just a means to get to know you. I hope you can welcome me in.

Here is the Pastor Wade Smith's sermon from today titled, "Please Pass the Salt."

You know you're a photographer when...

...You have a camera the size of your torso. (Isaac doesn't use this all the time. Just for far away shots outside.)

...You go on your only vacation and you can't help but say... "oooo this would be a cool place to take a portrait." and then go off on a 30 min portrait session with your spouse.

... After your photo shoot you still can't get enough and you drive around on dirt roads for two hours trying to find the "it" shot.

D700

I just bought a D700 for myself. Check it out here. This means I will be able to shoot in low light without flash. I haven't had a chance to play around with it too much, but I cannot wait to show you the amazing photos this puts out! My bride this weekend is sure lucky to have this new camera attend her wedding.

Kelly & Brian's album

I did not mean to post twice in one day but check out Kelly & Brian's flushmount album I created. I had to get it designed and ordered by today so I could receive it by my bridal shows on Sept 21st in Syracuse and Sept 28th in Saratoga Springs. Click the photo to go to the album. I hope you love it!

Holly & Kurt's E-session

Out of the 12 weddings we already have scheduled for 2009 Holly & Kurt were the first ones to get their engagement session done. We will be photographing their wedding on July 18th of next year at Borio's in Cicero. We met at Breitbeck Park. It was 3pm so the sun was still pretty strong, but we managed to work around that. We walked all around Breitbeck and then wandered down into Wrights Landing and then over to the McCrobie building. We already have so much in common with these two I know it will just be great getting to know them more throughout the year. The way Kurt looks at Holly just melts your heart. I cannot wait for their wedding day. It is going to be wonderful. Their photos will not be available to view until after Labor Day. But if you click here you can sign up to be notified when the photos are available. Enjoy these previews for now.

Cute kiss. The love that these two have for each other just radiates from them.

Isaac is pumped to be my assistant. Doesn't his orange shirt look awesome against the blue sky? That is my fine art background talking.

I captured this moment while Kurt was helping Holly get onto the rock overlooking the lake. I love these candid moments. They are just so pure.

This was taken sitting on a stairway on the backside of the McCrobie building. What a nice shot it made! These two have great smiles and it was easy to take a great photo of them

Can't wait guys! I hope you enjoyed the photo session as I know both Isaac and I did!

Erik & Kelly's Bridal Shower

I am not quite sure if you still call it a "bridal" shower if the groom shows up? Anyone know the correct terminology? Anywho, one of my best friends from high school called me up a few months ago and told me of her plan to have me surprise her friend from college at her bridal shower. I was an actual gift, no wrapping, no bows, just me! But I gotta say what a great gift to give your favorite bride the gift of a professional photographer for your bridal shower. This was the first time every key player at the wedding were going to be together so the bridesmaids wanted to make sure that it all got captured. Kelly & Erik are getting married on Sept 27th near Cooperstown. Sadly for me I am not shooting their wedding, as they didn't know I existed until last Sunday. It was great to get to know both Kelly & Erik during the short time I was there. It was also just as nice to see my good friend Amber, who I haven't seen in quite some time.
The shower was held at Green Lakes State Park. It was a fun & relaxing bridal shower, with gorgous weather...how it should be! What a beautiful park. I really want to do some E-sessions there now. The food was provided by Dinosaur BBQ! MMM I LOVE LOVE LOVE their pulled pork and chicken. One of the perks of this job is I also get to be a food connoisseur. Thank you Amber and the girls for hiring me to capture the day. Thank you Kelly & Erik for putting up with a stranger at your bridal shower, I'm not too intimidating though! The photos are now available to view online here. Also here are some of my favorite shots from the day. I cannot wait to hear how the scrapbook turns out. Have a wonderful day! (I'm supposed to be doing Jury duty today, I wonder if they will let me go home early!)

The happy bride enjoying opening all her cool presents!

The bride and some of her bridesmaids down by the water. Doesn't it look like the Caribbean?

What a cool place. I can't wait to take engagement sessions here. Who is up for it?

I caught this candid moment as we were walking down by the water. They didn't even notice I was taking photos (At least I don't think so).

Their adorable son Jack. He sat in his chair for 5 minutes chewing on the same cheese doodle. I don't think he had warmed up to me yet! But by the end he did.

My high school friend Amber and Jack.

Most of the bridal party. Some people couldn't make the trip. Isn't this a fun photo to have? Much for relaxed then your wedding day. It is nice to have both types.

Lovely family photo. Jack stayed happy for about 30 seconds. Kids are usually fine and dandy until you tell them to sit in front of the camera, then something goes off in their head that makes them mad.

Love this shot! This was the first time Kelly & Erik had professional photos taken together. I figured this would be a nice opportunity to get some shots before the wedding so they were used to being in front of the camera. Now they can show these at the wedding.

There are so many more awesome photos so you have to check out the online photo gallery. It was great to be there with you two, have a wonderful wedding! I know it will be an amazing day.

Wow-wow-wow Christian & Andrea

What a wedding! The photos will speak for themselves in this case. Christian and Andrea had one of the most stunning weddings I have ever seen. Each and every wedding is special to me, but can I say wow. The day started off with myself heading off to meet the girls while they were getting ready out at the house, while Isaac met up with the guys at Steamers to catch some drinks and hanging out.
The ceremony was held at St. Joseph's church in Oswego. Father Cesta is always a hoot when he does weddings. We took some quick shots in the church but then had the great chance to head over to Bayshore Grove to take photos since the wedding there was canceled last minute. Thanks George for letting us show up on your day off! I always enjoy it when the bride and groom leave a good chunk of time to take photos, everything works so much better. We were able to relax in a private spot, just us and the bridal party. I know everyone enjoyed being together before the craziness of the party started. After a couple beers and makeup checks we wandered off to take photos on the grounds of Bayshore. The wind was blowing but that didn't stop us from having fun. Andreas dress was stunning on her as were the bridesmaid's dresses. They were made by a designer in NYC for the girls. I loved every part of the dresses and the simple yet elegant flowers. You might remember Andrea & Christian from an engagement session I took a few months ago.
Christian & Andrea were quite a dashing couple, it was nice to have enough time to take great photos of them together without inturreption.
While we were out at Bayshore taking photos Dave Hawthorne was entertaining the cocktail crowd. We had our staff photographer Leanna out at the reception site during the 2 hr cocktail so we didn't miss a photo opp.
Once we got to the party the fun started immediately. The reception was held under a tent on the shores of Lake Ontario, at Christian's fathers house. It was such a beautiful day to have a tent wedding. This was no ordinary tent wedding however. There were chandeliers hanging from the tent ceiling and tiffany blue fabric drapped all over. It was gorgeous. The gourmet food was provided by The American Foundry, who as always do a superb job. I had Filet Mignon! Yum my favorite. The extravigant decor and flowers were all done by Sean Pelky of Flowers by Mr. John Great job Sean, you made such a wonderful display to take photos around. The party kept rolling by one of our newest favorites... "It's Your Entertainment". Mike & Tim were some of the most professional, nice, fun, DJ's we have worked with. I know that our awesome dancing photos would not have happened if not for these guys. I Definitely would recommend you check them out.

Here are a few previews. It will be 2-3 weeks before the photos are available to view online. Until then sign up to be notified when the photos are ready. Enjoy!

The dresses and flowers were stunning.

So in love! It was so great to be a part of this important day.

Magazine cover here we come! Right Andrea? Lake Ontario is so beautiful

Here is the humongous tent that fit over 250 people. It was such a nice night that I was able to take a little stroll outside and capture some shots looking in!

Nate & Julie Said "I do"

What a great evening we had a Nate & Julie's wedding. We met them back at a wedding in July of 2007 and have enjoyed getting to know them since. This was our first time shooting a wedding at Greystone Castle in Canastota,NY. Annette was great to work with! When I found out Nate proposed to Julie during a Winter Guard event in front of hundreds of people, I knew this was going to be a very romantic yet crazy party. The ceremony was held on the first floor of the castle. It was a simple yet sweet ceremony with a few readings by close family and friends. Our favorites, Visa Versa Entertainment provided the rockin music keep the party going well into the night. I wish I could remember who did the cupcakes and who made the food, because they were both excellent! Nate & Julie: Your love for each other is contagious, thank you for letting us share in your day. Isaac and I are always grateful to be a part of such a wonderful day. Enjoy the preview photos. The rest will not be up for another 2-3 weeks because of the holiday.

This is my favorite shot from the entire day. So romantic! I added some effects onto the photo to give it this Tuscany feel. Before it looked vibrant like the photos below, which was nice, but this is just WOW. I think I might blow this one up to a 24" x 30" canvas for my studio.

Just a really cute moment I was able to capture between photos.

I love the red accents with the green in the background. The colors of their wedding were so great! Julie & Nate looked stunning.

These were the delicious cupcakes I mentioned. I had to try one as they looked amazing. The most frosting I have ever seen on cupcakes before. I wish I knew who made them... Makes me want cake right now!

This past weeks happenings

Wow- Where did this summer go. I have been so busy this week I haven't even had time to blog! Isaac and I are going away for a few days. We have yet to get up to the high peaks in the ADK's this summer so we are making it a point on our only weekend off to get away together. Before we leave I will be setting up blogs for each day. Here is whats coming up:

Today: The Welsh family portrait
Saturday: Nate & Julie's Wedding at Greystone Castle
Sunday: Andrea & Christian's wedding on Lake Ontario
Monday: Erik & Kelly's bridal shower at Green Lakes State Park
Tuesday: Holly & Kurt's E-session at Breitbeck park
Wednesday... SURPRISE

Don't forget to look back on past blogs to view recent albums, weddings, portraits, etc...

Last Wednesday I had the chance to photograph Amy & Jeff Welsh with their adorable daughter Sadie and Amy's mother Larue who was up visiting from Baltimore. It was an early morning shot so the sun was just right. Unfortunatly the grass was still wet so things got a little dirty towards the end. I have way to many favorites to post on my blog so you will have to go onto their online photo gallery to check out the rest of the photos. This was one of my favorite portrait sessions this year. There is something about this little girl Sadie. She was so great for the camera, even stopping for a minute to pose for the camera by herself. Watch out mom and dad you may have trouble on your hands. What a great chance to get 3 generations in a shot! Enjoy

I love this first shot of Sadie, mom and grandma. She wanted to stand up like a big girl, but still didn't want to let go of their hands.

I love the expression on her face. It is priceless. I think she was trying to figure out if she trusted me yet or not.

Turns out she loves having her photo taken. I love the clean background with the trees and shed. So simple yet so wonderful. Isn't the little flip of her hair so cute.

Sadie had this mini rocking chair that she loved sitting in. I always love the shots from the torso down. I don't understand why, but I do.

Finally got all 4 together. I love the driveway fading into the background.

One of my favorites from the whole session. I love how this captures the movement in her body as she ran up the driveway.

It is getting to be that time of year when portrait sessions are booking up quick. With a limited amount of slots available a week make sure you call ahead early to get your fall session booked. We hope you love the photos. Have a wonderful day!

Album design

I decided it would be a good idea to put all album designs on a separate blog so it doesn't fill this one up. Today I finished designing Amanda & Paul's album. These two lovebirds got married over a year ago when Paul was being sent overseas with the ARMY. On May 24th of this year they finally got their dream wedding with family and friends around. It was quite a party. This is a 24 sided flushmount album that will come in black leather, very sharp! Click on the photo to go to the rest of the design.

August Newbie #3

Sorry this is a day late. Here is my third idea/product for August. Although not completely new I am taking this product to a new level. Gallery wrap canvases. I'm sure many of you have seen some while in my studio, if you haven't here are some photos of my canvases:

This is a 16x16" gallery wrap I made from a photo shoot this past winter.

See how the image wraps around the side. We always make sure nothing important gets wrapped around the edge.

This is a 24" x 30" gallery wrap I JUST got in the mail. It is a photo that Meghan Thomas took of Isaac and I on our third anniversary. You have to come check this out! Now I will give a $25 gift card to anyone who can figure out where this was taken.

This is one of our newest gallery wraps, it even comes framed. We choose an antique(ish) gold. How sophisticated! This is 18" x 24" with an old photo effect of our March bride Jen. One of my favorite photos ever.

This was our first gallery wrap ever. It is a 16" x 24" wrap of the Leonardo family taken during July 2007. I actually think it should have been ordered bigger since there are so many people in the photo.

Well there you go! Some more ideas on how to use photographs. There are so many more ideas out there than just printing out 4x6's and 8x10's. I hope you all rush in now and order some!

This past weekend I worked a total of 24 hours, two weddings and a bridal shower on Sunday. I have a lot to catch you all up on, so I will be blogging a new thing every day. Come back to look for previews from Julie & Nate's wedding at Greystone Castle, Andrea & Christian's wedding on Lake Ontario, and Kelly & Erik's bridal shower at Green Lakes. Have a great day!

Get your votes in!

There are only a few hours left to vote on a poll on the bottom of this blog. It is a poll to see how people found out about us! Here is what the tally is so far, click on it to view it bigger:

This is going to be a busy weekend. We have a wedding Friday night at Greystone Castle and then a tent wedding Saturday on the shores of Lake Ontario... my favorite! Then on Sunday I am going to photograph a Jack & Jill bridal shower. One of my good friends from high school called and hired me to shoot the bridal shower of one of her best friends from college. It will be so much fun! I am going to have a bunch of awesome images to show you after

Also just to let you all know that we have signed up to be vendors at two bridal shows this September. Sunday Sept 19th come down and meet us at the Holiday Inn on Carrier Circle in Syracuse. Also on Sunday September 28th we will be showcasing our work at the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs. We have two offices, (one in Oswego/Syracuse, and the other in Saratoga Springs) and we realized it was time to advertise for both locations! I am so excited to be doing a lot more Saratoga Springs weddings. I lived there for over 20 years so I know the town like the back of my hand. It is so much fun to show my brides and grooms the "secret" parts of town during our engagement sessions and wedding day photo sessions.

Lastly Kelly & Brian's wedding at Saratoga National Golf Course will be available tonight. I am just waiting for the photos to finish uploading to the site. ENJOY!

Amber & Johnny tie the knot.

On Friday August 8th Isaac and I had the chance to photograph Amber & Johnny's wedding on the shores of Lake Ontario. We have been doing a lot of outdoor ceremonies lately, and photographing ones on Lake Ontario have been some of our favorite weddings. Instead of unity candles Amber * Johnny choose to unite with a sand ceremony. The wind was strong but everyone still had a great time. We managed to get all the photos done outside on the lake before the rain came. Amber & Johnny continued the party late into the night at the American Foundry. It was a joyous occasion for all. It was so nice to meet everyone. It will be about 3 weeks before the rest of the photos are available to view online. Until then go to our client proofing page at www.KainsPhotography.com and sign up to be notified when the photos are ready. Until then I hope you enjoy the slide show.

August newbie #2 & Meg & Ian's E-session

I had mentioned last week that I was going to be unveiling a new idea/product/process every week during the month of August. This week I wanted to show you all some of our new product lines. Many of you will have an engagement session before your wedding. Instead of just getting an 8x10, may we suggest two other AWESOME options. Andrea & Christian, our bride and groom for August 16th had us make table number's that included a different photo from their engagement session along with the table number. This is a unique idea to showcase your photos to your guests. Each table number is $10. We can mix and match frames to suit your decor as well.

One of our most favorite products are our gift books. After your engagement session we can create little books to hand out as thank you gifts to your guests. The gift albums are mini flush-mount albums that your guests will cherish for a long time. Spend $500 on chocolate that will be gone by midnight or on photo albums that will last forever... the choice is easy!
$175.00 for 15 books (1 set)= $11.67 a piece
but if you by 6 of more sets they are 40% off.
$630.00 for 90 books (6 sets)= $7.00 a piece

You could also order just one set after the wedding and for $175 you have thank you gifts for everyone in your bridal party and for the important people in your life. I know Isaac and I spent at least $30 on each bridal party member for their gifts at Things Remembered. We had 12 people in our bridal party so we spent at least $360.00 for bridal party gifts alone. We could have spent less than that and gotten our favorite people something they will love forever.

Many of you may have heard me mention my good friend Meghan Thomas. She owns Meghan Thomas Photography in Syracuse. Last week Isaac and I met up with Meg & her boyfriend Ian for a collaborative E-Session. Meg took photos of Isaac and I, while we took photos of Meg & Ian. I beat her to the punch with posting photos so once she has some up of us I will post the link to her blog. I am really enjoying getting outside and exploring different angles, poses, and locations. Lately post-processing has been really fun as well! I have been enjoying working with my new grunge effects and high contrast look.

P.S. I got the IPhone and I love it!
