Saratoga bridal show & Leaving on a jet plane

What a weekend. This past Sunday Isaac and I showed off our work at the Saratoga National Museum of Dance's bridal show. It was an intimate show where we really got some time to sit down with many brides, grooms, parents, sisters, friends, and grandparents. I cannot wait for 2009 (and 2010) as I know there will be many great weddings. I want to thank everyone who took the time to chat with us, we hope you liked what you saw! We look forward to hearing from you very soon.

As all of you may know I am leaving for the Dominican Republic this week. We are leaving at 2:30am to drive to Rochester for our 6am flight on Friday. I will not be back until October 12th. Please keep me in your prayers as I go out of my comfort zone to reach people in need.
My studio manager Kristen will be in the office next week answer phone calls and working on some things. There are certain things that will need to wait until I get back, such as album design (sorry). Isaac will also be in the office during the evenings doing a small amount of consultations and work. If you would like to come see our work and cannot wait until I am back please give Isaac a call and he will set something up with you. I will not be back into the office until October 14th. I am hoping to have sporadic internet access while I am there. We will be staying at the Alliance Guest house where there should be internet. Keep up with my journey on my missions blog:

Dan & Jolynn's Video

Hello! I just got a call this morning about Dan & Jolynn's video on my blog. I was not aware that it wasn't working over the weekend. I use a website called YouTube to post all of my videos and it was something on their end. I have since solved the problem and the video should work properly now. Also this is just a preview of some of my favorite photos from their wedding. These are not all of the photos we took. We will be posting every photo onto their online photo gallery within 3 weeks. You can view sign up to be notified when the photos are ready by going to www.KainsPhotography.com. Go to the wedding website and click on the online proofing page. Find and click on Dan & Jolynn's name and all you have to do is add your email address to the list. Once the photos are all on the online photo gallery you will receive an email saying they are ready. If you have any questions please let me know. Have a wonderful day!

"Love the dress"

Instead of a "trash the dress" photo session, I am now proclaiming a NEW type of photo session:
"Love the dress- a photo session dedicated to you and you favorite dress." or shall I call it "This dress rocks: because wearing your dress once just doesn't cut it." Please help me decide which saying to use. Post your opinion on my comment.
*** To get the full effect you should check out all of the photos on my NEW Facebook group. Since I know all of your blog readers out there have Facebook accounts go here and view the rest of the photos... and don't forget to join the group and be my friend!

Now here goes the NEW type of session, some of my most favorite photos ever. ENJOY!

Upping the game

Today Meghan Thomas and I photographed around Oswego for a couple hours with my studio assistant Kristen. Kristen got married on August 2nd of this year and wanted to have a longer photo shoot with her in her dress now that the wedding is over... Of course I jumped on the opportunity to have a willing model to photograph with no time limit.
I took over 600 images in the 3 1/2 hr shoot. I have 60 photos that I simply cannot live without. All different, all amazing. Here is one of my top 5 favorites.

Want to see more? Check out the blog tomorrow.
Want to have a photo session like this? Ask me how! You don't have to be in NYC to get the city feel... or as you will see tomorrow, the country bumpkin look can be found anywhere as well.

Coming up tomorrow:

***Only 10 wedding spots available for 2009***
I have been so busy with wedding season, senior portraits, family portraits, engagement sessions, and commercial photography jobs I haven't even had time to blog anything! We have gotten a contract with SUNY Oswego's athletic department to photograph their entire department so I have been busy shooting head shots, action photos, and team photos. I have been getting out there and taking a lot of portraits lately also. Our most recent session brought us all over Oswego. I always forget how much I love shooting high school seniors until I start back up. It is just so much fun being creative and doing crazy things with seniors.
This weekend we are going to be in Saratoga Springs for a bridal show at the National Dance Museum. I am so excited to break into the capital district area.
From October 2nd to October 13th I will be away in the Dominican Republic for a missions trip with my church. So i apologize ahead of time but I will not be in the office for 12 days, therefore work will be at a stand still until I get back. I am trying very hard to get as much done as possible before I leave! Thanks for being so understanding.
This past weekend Isaac, Catherine, and I, had the privilege to photograph Dan & Jolynn's wedding. It was a tent wedding... our favorite kind of reception! It was so great to finally meet all the wonderful family and friends that have been a big part of each of their lives. I will be posting a slide show from their wedding tomorrow but for now enjoy these teasers:

FREE Mini-books & Bridal show wrap up

What a great time Isaac and I had at our bridal show this past Sunday. This was our first time constructing the walls and bringing furniture to a show and I believe it was a hit. It was so great to meet you all and thank you for taking the time to chat with either myself or Isaac. It was nice to actually be able to sit down and have a conversation with people instead of having to stand on opposite sides of a table. We are offering a BOOK NOW promotion for all brides and grooms that attended the bridal show. Anyone that books us by the end of the day on Friday will receive 15 free mini books with their package. These books are great to give to your bridal party and/or any close family members. Please give us a call or email me at Jenna@KainsPhotography.com to let me know what you thought about our work! Have a wonderful evening!

It is not a picture session it is a portrait experience: On the flip side of the camera

Last night Isaac and I got our picture taken by an employee of Olan Mills at our church. We did it for two reasons. One is that our church is having a photo directory of people in our church and Isaac and I wanted to be in it... and unfortunately this was the only way to get into the directory. Second we wanted to get our picture taken because we were curious to see how Olan Mills did things. It was also free, but that is besides the point.
Well I gotta say... I was not surprised. I say picture because there was no art, creativity, or skill used in taking our picture. I couldn't figure out which camera they were using, but I did find out that whatever camera it was, the photos were being taken on a floppy disk! I was in shock and awe to believe someone was even using a camera that did that. I figured they have all been sent to the graveyard of old cameras and bad camera inventions. A standard 6 shots were taken with standard poses and standard backdrops. A portrait is something that has style, character, and tends to be a bit creative, nothing is standard about it. A portrait is something you want to hang on your wall for the next decade, although we recommend getting your family portrait taken ever 2-3 years since people change and families grow. A picture is not what you will get when you hire us at Kain's Photography.
After we took our 6 shots we went back into the "waiting room" until our customer service rep came and welcomed us into his little sales room. The guy was nice enough but I still felt like I was at a used car dealer trying to get rushed into this deal that is too good to pass up. Before Isaac and I walked into the sales room we had already agreed to tell him we were photographers before he gave us his sales pitch. Frankly we didn't want to waste his time or our time. We had just hired our friend Meghan Thomas to take portraits of us and we were in no need of a cheesy smile with backdrop.
After we told him we were photographers and were not interested in ordering any additional prints he still tried to sell us just the limited time upgrade for $30 which would retouch our free upgrad... oh ya and we would be able to pick our pose! OOOO big deal! That is why our price is our price no matter what. We do not give "discounts" to lure you into a rushed decision. We want everyone to have the same advantage as the next person and we feel it is fair for everyone. We are artists, not used car salesmen.
I walked away from this experience a better person (I hope). Experiences like this always remind me where I want to go and what I don't want to do in my business. I don't think I have ever been a "salesperson" but I really don't want to be like that now. I figure if I show you my work you can decide for yourself if you want to hire us. I will educate you on all the options, not to sell you everything but to make sure you have an idea of all of your options. I am most happy when you come away with something you are satisfied with!
And that is why hiring a small studio like Kain's Photography is so important. It is not a picture session it is a portrait experience.

We are busy getting ready for our bridal show this weekend. Sunday Sept 11th from 12-4pm at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool. go to www.SyracuseWedding.com to register. Come by and check us out we are going to have a rockin booth! I cannot wait to unveil it! Have a blessed day :-)

Niki & Brandon tied the knot

This past Saturday I ventured over to Argyle, NY with my trusty second shooter Meghan Thomas for Niki & Brandon's wedding. The wedding took place on the future horse farm of Niki & Brandon. I have known both of them for quite some time as they were both good friends with my older sister Caitlin in high school. Despite the torrential downpour all day everyone had a wonderful time. It was great to be there with Niki and Brandon on this day they have been waiting for for years. The entire was planned by Christine Wheat Special Events. I had the pleasure of working with Krista and her trusty assistants throughout the day. What a great team. We had a lot of fun working with you girls. The wonderful ceremony was done by Mary & Denis Cole of Excellent Wedding Options. They are a great couple who work together, kind of like Isaac and I.
The catering was provided by Black Diamond Catering. They catered both of my sisters weddings so this was not the first time working with Michael. The food was perfect and the service was great! Always a great job guys.
The tunes were provided by the outstanding band Soul Session. These guys (and girl) rocked the group until past midnight. I could not believe how long guests stayed on the dance floor for.
If you are getting married anywhere close to the Capital District area I highly recommend you hire these professionals. Here is a video I hope shows off the love and happiness throughout the weekend. The rest of the photos will be up in about 3 weeks. Enjoy!
***My email server is being switched so if an email gets kicked back to you please try to send it tomorrow*** Thanks!

New Products!

I love getting new stuff in. I have all these ideas for my photos and I am so excited to actually put those ideas to work!

This is our new table I made. It is a high-top table with a 24" diameter sepia photo. Thanks to our beautiful bride Jenny for this great expression. Isaac loves it with the table clothe and I don't so we are going to sleep on it. This will be having it's debut to the public at our bridal show on Sept 14th. Come visit us in Syracuse at the Holiday Inn on Electronics Parkway from 12-4pm. We will be giving away some cool prizes. Here is the link for the bridal show information.

These are two of our newest canvases. They are 16x24" and framed in a simple black frame. I love them!

Monica & Bill's E-Session

Last night I took a drive down to Cazenovia to meet up with Monica & Bill. This was the first time meeting them and I am so excited for their wedding on November 1st of this year. These two are so cute together. Between Monica's contagious laugh and Bill's crazy faces I know their wedding will be so much fun. The weather was gorgeous and Lakeland Park was the perfect spot.
You can view the rest of their photos here. Enjoy the previews, even I can't decide which one is my favorite! All of these photos were taken with my NEW D700 and my 70-200mm 2.8 or 50mm 1.8 lens. I love love love this new camera.

Kim & Josh got hitched!

I have never laughed so much at a wedding. Without a doubt the craziest wedding we have ever photographed. Isaac and I had so much fun this past Saturday photographing Kim & Josh's wedding at the Red Mill Inn in Baldwinsville. Kim called me 9 days before her wedding in a panic looking for a photographer last minute. Luckily Isaac and I had planned to take that weekend off and we were available to shoot their wedding the following weekend. I can't believe we didn't know these two before we got to their wedding, because it feels like we have known them for a long time. We just clicked!
I showed up about 2 hrs before the ceremony to hang out with the girls while they got ready. I was able to get them outside before the ceremony started to get some fun photos. Isaac went off with the guys while they drank a bottle of Whiskey and got ready. The ceremony was held at Little Utica Church in Phoenix. What a cute little church. After pictures at the church we met up at the Red Mill Inn in Baldwinsville to take photos on the island. What a great time we had! I love fun photo shoots where the bridal party lets loose and really has fun. The guys even wanted photos taken with the porta-potties... can you believe it was their idea!
The party started inside once we were done. The food by Lock 24 was great, the cake by Jeff Hoefer was amazing (and it tasted awesome!!!) and the music by Cornell Bennett of Ithaca was "bumping". What a party crowd! It won't be until you see all of the photos that you will be able to understand the sheer craziness that went on. Sign up here to be notified when the photos are ready in 3 weeks

Thank you Kim & Josh for letting us be a part of your day. We can't wait to see you guys again. Enjoy these preview photos. Also to let everyone know Isaac started his teaching job today so if you are waiting for photos or albums it will be a tiny delay until I get used to working by myself during the day. We are thinking about hiring an office assistant. Also I am going on a missions trip to the Dominican Republic from October 3rd to October 11th. So no one will be in the office then. I will try to get as much done as possible before I leave.

Josh with his two best men.

Drinking Whiskey. I love this shot Isaac captured from far away.

The beautiful bride. She was smiling about something.

The girls beforehand. Each dress was altered to add the blue accent piece. What a cool idea.

Mr. & Mrs. Exiting with bubbles.

Lock 24 on the Erie Canal.

The Budweiser Stage on the island in Baldwinsville.

I believe this was the groom's idea.

Tender kiss during a private moment before the craziness of the reception started.

I love reflections. It was such a gorgeous day, we were not sure how this puddle ended up here as the ground was completely dry. The Red Mill is such a great place to have a wedding. So many photo opps outside.

One of the bridges in Baldwinsville. I love architecture as well.

First dance moment. What a cute couple.

The sunet was gorgouse. I love the color of the sky.

On our way up to their room for a mini-photo session I took this photo of them in the elevator.

Um.... Another great idea of the bride and groom. I can't believe no one got hurt. There was a workout room right across the hall from the ballroom so they decided it would be run to get a shot of them "running" away together.
